SweatSync App Design

This project showcases my redesign concept for a new JMU Recreation app built to make it easier for students to discover, schedule, and participate in UREC group exercise classes.

Through interviews, surveys, and user research, I created a more intuitive and streamlined class-booking experience. Take a look!

Research Questions:

  1. What are the group ex classes they have taken at UREC? What are the classes they typically choose or avoid?

  2. Why do they choose to participate in UREC group exercise classes rather than the regular gym?

  3. What do they feel are the pros of working out with an instructor as their guide?

  4. Do they feel prepared for the workout class beforehand or have a good understanding of the class layout? Are the classes what they expect?

  5. Do they often attend classes with friends? Would picking a seat or spot beforehand relieve any pre-class stress?

  6. Do they prefer certain instructors? If so, why?

  7. Do they find the UREC website to be difficult to navigate?

  8. How often do they cancel classes or want to register last minute?

Here are a few highlights from what I discovered through my research!

These insights led directly to the design rationale presented below

Design Rationale

  • A customizable calendar lets students add classes and jobs while selecting preferred workout types.

  • The option to choose a spot in class ahead of time helps reduce stress and increase comfort.

  • Instructor reviews and clear class descriptions explain difficulty level, focus areas, and muscles used.

  • Each class includes the music genre or playlist style so students know what to expect.

  • A waitlist feature notifies students when a spot opens in a full class, making it easier to join when schedules change.
